Sustainability x NA‑KD
NA‑KD is never hiding out in the changing rooms as far as sustainability goes. We won’t shy away from thinking outside the box and welcome disruptive technologies that can drive the change needed. We are aware of the many challenges of the fashion industry, but believe most of them can be overcome with the fabric of dedication and threads of innovation.
We are dedicated to contribute to the Sustainable Develop Goals as formulated by the United Nations. For the sake of the future for all of us, of course – but also because that’s just the way we like to do business. Our sustainability work is a fundamental part of how we run our business at NA‑KD.
The five Sustainable Development Goals where we contribute the most are:
  • SDG 5 – Gender Equality
  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 12 – Responsible consumtion and production
  • SDG 13 – Climate action
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the goals

Climate change
Climate change is the most daunting challenge that humanity has ever faced. Its consequences will affect our planet and everyone living on it. Evidence shows that humanity itself is taking grave risks with the stability of the Earth's resources and the ecosystem that we all depend on. Climate stability is for the sake of all of us.
SDG 13 – Climate Action
Time is now
To reduce the risks, we must all work together to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C above pre industrial levels. We are already at plus 1°C so the time to act is now! That's why NA‑KD has set a goal to be climate neutral by 2025. Exactly how we will reach this target we do not know yet. But we know we must have bold ambitions to drive the change that is needed.

It’s our responsibility
Depending on what research you look at, and how you define the industry, the fashion sector has a significant impact on climate change – ranging somewhere between 3-10 % of total greenhouse gas emissions. From our point of view it doesn't matter exactly what the number is. The important thing is that we know it is significant, and that we have to act. Now.
Calculating our greenhouse gas emissions
NA‑KD has initiated work to quantify, track and report our greenhouse gas emissions according to the GHG protocol. We will set measurable targets to reduce our own emissions as well as other emissions in our value chain – all in alignment with the 1,5°C pathway. Our aim is to report on our progress in this work in our Sustainability Report for 2020.
NA‑KD climate compensation
Our number one focus is to reduce emissions. As an e-commerce company we are working in close collaboration with our transport providers. But there is no such thing as sustainable transport today – in particular not for long truck transportations. In waiting for more sustainable solutions, we climate compensate all our transports and are in close dialogue with all our logistics providers to push the change needed in the transport industry.

Always Gold Standard
Our work and projects for climate neutrality are accredited by the Gold Standard. The Gold Standard for the Global Goals is a standard and logo certification mark program for non-governmental emission reductions projects in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the Voluntary Carbon Market and other climate and development interventions.

Wind for Shipping
To climate compensation transportation we are investing in a wind power project of 75 wind turbines in Hindustan. We do this through a collaboration with Tricorona Climate Partner.

Black Week 2020
During Black Week of 2020, NA‑KD will compensate for all carbon emissions generated by us and our producers by investing in Gold Standard projects such as renewable energy or the plantation of trees.
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the goals
2025 goal
100% more sustainable materials
At NA‑KD we are working to increase our share of recycled and sustainable materials in everything we do; from our products to the packaging that the garments arrive in. And here is our promise: All our clothes are going to be made of 100% more sustainable materials by the year 2025.
Sustainable cotton (organic, BCI or recycled), sustainable natural fibres (wood based or linen) and recycled polyester. In. All. Our. Garments. The bar is set high, but we are confident that we can reach it in good time. We have gone from single digit numbers in the beginning of 2019, to well over 20% by the end of 2020 – and aiming for 50 % in 2021.

More sustainable production methods
A sustainable garment is not all about the materials it's made out of. We also need to mind the methods by which it has been produced. The amount of water used, chemical choices and amounts, energy efficiency and sources, the amount of waste created in the process.
Switching to more sustainable production methods is equally important as the material the garment is made out of.
Daring denim goals
100% more sustainable cotton in all our denim by 2022
At the end of 2020, 70% of all our new NA‑KD denim products are made from more sustainable cotton (organic or recycled), and by 2022 all new denim styles will be from more sustainable cotton.
Closing the gap in the circle
Circular value chain / fashion industry
  1. Raw material production
  2. Yarn & fabric production
  3. Manufacturing of products
  4. Retail
  5. Consumer use
  6. End of life
In a global perspective, 80% of all discarded textiles are doomed for landfill or incineration. Only 20% are actually reused or recycled. At NA‑KD we believe this needs to change! The entire fashion industry needs to become a circular industry.
Concepts like reselling, recycling and up-cycling need to be natural components of our business. We need to find solutions to keep virgin resources in a circular system. We also need to think ahead. Plan already in the design phase how the composition of materials in the garment can be recycled.
Entrepreneurial Collaboration & Innovation
We are always curious to explore new disruptive technologies and ideas that have the possibility to push the fashion industry in a more sustainable direction. In that spirit, we strive to collaborate with innovative entrepreneurs, supporting their business with small scale orders. In these projects they can test and refine their solution. At the same time we can offer our customers unique products – that are making the fashion world just a bit more sustainable. A win-win-win!

NA‑KD and you
It's easy to be NA‑KD
Want to take part in our work for a sustainable world of fashion? Start by extending the lifetime of the items you buy from us: If you are wearing your garment twice as many times, it reduces the relative climate impact of it by 50%. Simple as that! :)
